Freeze-thaw cycles push against a wall that doesn't have proper drainage behind it, which is exactly how a wall built on the cheap starts to lean or bow within a few seasons. Gravel backfill and a compacted base aren't optional extras here, they're the difference between a wall that's still straight in ten years and one you're rebuilding in three.
Taller walls (generally over about four feet, depending on the slope and soil) sometimes need geogrid reinforcement tied back into the hillside behind them, and very tall or load-bearing walls can require engineering review and a permit through the city. We handle that conversation as part of the quote, not as a surprise after the wall's already planned.
Depends on height and location, shorter walls typically don't, taller or load-bearing walls usually do. We'll tell you straight during the estimate rather than let it become a surprise.
