Mulch or Rock: Which Is Actually Right for Your Beds

This comes up on nearly every bed project, and there isn't a universal right answer, mulch and rock solve different problems, and the best choice depends on what's actually planted there and how much upkeep you want to sign up for.

Mulch breaks down over time. That sounds like a downside, and in terms of maintenance it is, most mulch beds need a refresh every year or two to keep their color and depth. But that breakdown is also mulch's biggest advantage: as it decomposes it feeds the soil underneath, which matters if there are shrubs, perennials or trees actually growing in that bed that benefit from improving soil over time.

Rock doesn't break down. A rock bed installed correctly can look essentially the same five or ten years later with close to zero maintenance. That permanence is exactly why rock makes sense around foundations, in beds with minimal or no plantings, or in spots that are a pain to get equipment or a wheelbarrow back into for a refresh. The tradeoff is that rock does nothing for the soil, and it holds heat more than mulch does, which can stress out plants that don't like having warm roots in summer.

A weed barrier fabric under rock is usually a good call since you're going for long-term, low-maintenance coverage anyway. Under mulch we're more selective, fabric can block mulch from feeding the soil the way it's supposed to, and it tends to work its way to the surface after a season or two regardless.

The practical way to decide: if a bed is planted heavy with things that'll benefit from improving soil, lean mulch. If it's a foundation bed, a low-planting area, or somewhere you don't want to think about again for years, rock earns its higher upfront cost. Plenty of properties end up with both, mulch where the plantings need it, rock where permanence matters more.
